The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has officially introduced a "seeded ranking mechanism" like tennis for the upcoming World Cup 2026.
Under the new changes, FIFA will allocate the top team from each group to different "paths" in the tournament to avoid top teams competing too early in the competition.
For example, top seed Spain and second seed Argentina will be placed on opposite ends of the knockout bracket. This means both teams would need to advance through multiple stages before potentially meeting in the grand final.
Similarly, third seed France and fourth seed England will also be placed in sperate regions. If France or England were to challenge Spain or Argentina, the earliest they could meet would be in the semi-finals.
This change significantly enhances the excitement and discussion in the latter stages of the tournament and ensures the most thrilling matchups are reserved for the later rounds. Therefore, make sure to secure your spot at those matches as soon as possible before it becomes too late.
